Saturday- Sugar Art by La Fleur
Today Mom and I purchased the ingredients for making edible sugar flowers for decorating cakes and other edible confections, as well as a small rolling pin. Avelina C. Florendo, a visiting instructor, conducted the Saturday Workshop on Roses. It was a seven-hour-long workshop, with a break for dinner. We learned how to use the materials, tools, and the techniques to make edible sugar roses, complete with petal formation, color application, calyx and sepal formation, and leaf formation. It was an entertaining workshop, and we walked away with about a decade of flowers each.
My first mistake was:
The rose flowers were too small, then
The flowers were too thick-gauged, then
The outer petals were too short.
We used Crisco to prevent sticking, and water for glue.
All my flowers were white. We dyed the paste with a green food coloring paste to form the calyx and sepals and leaves.
We all took our products home and will save them for decorating our fondant creations during the next class.
