Second Sunday in Ordinary Time and Commemoration of the Work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Noon Mass  was celebrated by Fr. Kris and Fr. David H. Taylor, with Fr. Carmen D'Amico and Deacon Toby Gaines.  Fr. David's parish, St. Charles Lwanga parish, brought its director of music (James Avant) and choir to sing with us, the Cathedral Choir, led by Don.  A soprano, Sharon, and an alto, Darlene, were my seatmates in choir today.

I met up with Mom and Dad after Mass and we went for a reception and celebration after Mass downstairs in the Cathedral Social Hall.

The MC was Ronald B. Saunders.  A welcome was made by Fr. Kris, followed by a liturgical dance by Dr. Evelyn Kitchens-Stephens, who then led all of us to dance the Our Father together.  The Pittsburgh Gospel Lights played a couple songs for us, followed by Eric Springer, who stood in for his wife Cecile, as the introduction of the speaker.  The Rev. Dr. Harold T. Lewis spoke, and mentioned Genesis 20:37, a passage about Joseph that spoke of "elimination of dreamers."

Dr. Mary McKinney presented the awards to the winners of the school essay/poster contest.  The attending poster winner, Amber Taylor, a third grader, was prompted to show her poster at each table.  It was bright and colorful, and I complimented her on her reading ability, as well, as she read a paragraph about her poster before showing it at each table.

The essay winners were from the middle school age:  6-8th grade, inclusive.

The Gospel Lights performed one last time, then Greta Stokes Tucker (Director of the Diocesan Office for Cultural Diversity and Persons with Disabilities) and Dorothy Miller (Chair, Race and Reconciliation Dialogue Group at the Cathedral) made closing remarks.

I said hello to Jim Cunningham after Mass, and walked back with Elaine.
