WED 18 MAR 2020 to

WED 18 MAR 2020- Awoke about 05.00, did some planning, had lunch at home then headed over to D and M. Took care of some such computer work, made and took some calls, finished some apps, dinner chez D and M, NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt, Jeopardy! and more submission of electronic documents. It's raining now, or at least the pavement is wet.
I have very very little data left---only less than 10%. I must preserve what's there.
Mentions of COVID-19 are everywhere.
We were told on FRI 13 MAR that the museum was closing for an initial period of 2 weeks. Let's hope that---even though this is the inital wave of the virus through the USA, that shorter (rather than longer) periods of hunkering down/ self-quarantining will be sufficient.
Ai, nako.

THU 19 MAR 2020-  Quiet day. Got rid of some files, cleared most of a whole box of them. Had dinner at D and M. Watched Jeopardy! Received an email for work at home! For now, we will report our telework on Monday electronically to our super. Great weather by the time I went outside---62 Fahrenheit when I left, it would be the low for the whole evening.

 FRI 20 MAR 2020-
Governor Wolf has asked all non-life-sustaining business to close by 8PM this evening.

M sent me the following email:

HIS EMINENCE ANTONIO LUIS CARDINAL TAGLE'S LENTEN RECOLLECTION
Contextualized in the current world crisis on COVID 19.  May you be blessed as it has blessed me 🙂

THREE POINTS on our current situation:

1. Wash your hands but let God wash your heart.
2. Avoid Pilate's way of washing hands but imitate Jesus' way
3. This (corona) crown of suffering can become our crown of glory

1. Wash your hands... but let God wash your heart.
Feed your heart with the word of God that purifies the heart. Do not forget the Lord because if you do, you will.become proud and a proud heart will not listen to God. Let your heart be purified for only a purified heart can stop the spread of the viruses of greed, envy, murder, unchastity, deceit, etc.
Wash your hands but do not forget Jesus' hands. "Wash me, O Lord and I will be whiter than snow" (Psalm 51:7) Remember that it is the Lord who will wash us, his blood to wash us.

2. Avoid Pilate's washing of hands but wash your hands like Jesus...
Pilate saw no virus in Jesus. He saw the real virus - envy of those who want to go against Jesus. Washing his hands, he cleansed himself of all responsibilities. It was insensitivity and not caring for others. This is not the washing that Jesus wants. Jesus had his own version of washing of hands. It is about letting tears of compassion to wash your vision to see a neighbor.  Today is not the time for blaming institutions or excusing self from responsibility.  We need Jesus to apply spittle or his saliva on our eyes for us to see a neighbor and be sensitive to their needs. Follow Jesus' way of washing his hands so that others may live.

3. Corona and crown of thorns
The virus is called corona because of its spikes. This tiny virus crosses boundaries, kept us home, taught some fundamental lessons amidst humanity's achievements...
With Jesus the crown of thorns was meant to insult him, mock him. In Jesus humiliated with the crown of thorns, we see wisdom, glory and the strength of God. This is our desire at this time of crisis - to see the wisdom and glory of God.  Jesus crowned with thorns said, "Into your hands, I commend my Spirit".
This crown of suffering can  become our crown of glory if accepted like Jesus did - in faith and in hope with Mary to show us the way.

Everywhere I go during the week has been shuttered shut---where I work, where I play, where I pray---all by early this week. I mentioned to M that it is similar to Anne Frank, what with staying inside, almost ~ curfew; "Except we can go outside," M replied.

I've spoken with several friends about the experience of visiting "The House Behind," which two families and a dentist occupied in Amsterdam during World War II.  These people were shuttered in for the time they lived there, unable to go outside. One enters the House Behind (Het Achterhuis) of the Anne Frank Museum/House (Anne Frank Huis) via the stairicase hidden by a bookcase. The wallpaper and the photos she pasted up on her bedroom wall (by now over 75 years old), though faded---some of the movie stars' unrecognizable by the teenagers visiting the museum---tell part of the story of a young teen with her family their companions hiding from a world at war. Yes, it is unimaginable what they went through. Because yes, we can go outside...but I picture outside to be like a deadzone or zombie-scape, with our large city and others barely populated.

Now time for the BBC News from WQED FM online-- Two German cities are on lockdown....
14 Million people have been asked to stay home in California.
Japan is preparing for the Summer 2020 Olympics.
Malaysia closed its schools and non-essential places. Kuala Lumpur had a large religious gathering earlier, which was surmised to have caused the spread of the virus in that country.
Mumbai has closed, except for essential businesses.
That's the BBC News at 07.00.

Today there are 268 confirmed cases of COVID-19 AKA Coronavirus. There were less than ten.
I had a chance to chat with some friends from Pittsburgh and further afield in NM today. I guess a lot of this is wait and see. China, what with its lockdown, has no new cases from within the country today. Italy now has the highest number of deaths in a day today. It is sad.

After a fish-based dinner, M and I watched Jeopardy! and I worked on instructional skills for work, by doing some exercises with online links to the museum, the California Academy of Sciences, and the BEETLES out of the Lawrence Hall of Science. Last night I worked on 2 very short videos from CAS; tonight I spent ~2 hours on videos from CMNH and BEETLES. Great fun. Time to call it an evening.

SAT 21 MAR 2020- Went grocery shopping with D with a long list from M. Went grocery shoppingin Friendship/ Shadyside. We got supplies at 2 stores, and after putting items away, I had a chance to chat with JD in the Boston area. CW stays in touch with friends through a new Minecraft account. Many remote workers are using Zoom.com accounts to conference. JD described how everyone in the Boston area is waiting to hear about the rest of the school year (1 week out of a 3 week period has been completed by staying in place). JD also said that there were crowds at the grocery store in Cambridge (vs. ~<20 about="" ail.="" all="" and="" arrived="" by="" carnegie="" classes="" considering="" delivered.="" earlier="" fared:="" food="" gave="" groceries="" had="" having="" how="" in="" learning="" local="" making="" mellon="" morning="" now="" of="" option="" p="" pass="" pittsburgh="" postponed="" remotely="" scholarships="" students="" talked="" the="" their="" they="" this="" travel="" universities="" university="" we="" week="" were="" when="" who="">I said that everywhere I work, play, or pray has been closed by last SAT, 14 MAR 2020: The museum, the pool at the community center, the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for Broadway Across America, and the Diocese of Pittsburgh Masses have all been shuttered close, at least until the 28th of March 2020.
Took a nap. Had a snack.
