First Friday at the Frick, July 2011

Daphne Alderson and her band provided entertainment at this month's First Friday at the Frick. The band consisted of Ronald Heid, Douglas Levine, John Marcinizyn, Vladimir Mollov, and Paul Thompson. Some of the band members wrote arrangements of the songs she sang.

The evening consisted of torch songs, light ballads, and foreign tunes, from various genres and from all over the map---all beautifully illuminated by her emotive, soulful manner.

Maureen and I saved a spot right by the stage for Marissa and the children. We enjoyed some light snacks of fruit and cheese until they arrived. It was a feat to save them space, and we were all thrilled when they arrived.

At intermission, Beatrice joined me on a voyage to the greenhouse---she told me why it is called a greenhouse...and we visited the herbs room. We smelled the lavender and the rosemary, "Now rosemary, that's for remembrance," I intoned, telling her a girl in one of Shakespeare's plays, Ophelia, said that. We then ran into Solomon and Marissa, and we headed toward the carriage house........They ended up at the craft table, and I proceeded to the carriage house, where the docents honk the horns, causing surprise and bemusement among the visitors there.

We enjoyed the second half of the program, an encore consisting of a medley of "Over the Rainbow" and "The White Cliffs of Dover."
