Ordination, Pittsburgh 2007
This morning Mom, Dad, and I attended the ordination of three priests at St. Paul Cathedral. One of them was the parish's own Barry O'Leary, a former school principal who served as a deacon of our parish most recently. The Mass took place with much ceremony, including the Knights of Columbus, priests and bishops from throughout the Diocese, and seminarians, as well as the Most Reverend Paul J. Bradley, who is the auxiliary Bishop of Pittsburgh and Diocesan Administrator. The music was supplied by the Diocesan choir led by Fr. Jim Chepponis, accompanied by Don on the organ, with Diane R. cantoring. A relative of one of the ordained priests read the first reading (Marianne Schreck), and Mary Jo read the second reading. The gospel was followed by the Rite of Ordination, including invitation of the elect, response by the congregation ("thunderous applause" as described by Bishop Bradley in his homily), the homily, the five important questions (and answers) of the elect, promise of obedience, invitation to prayer, supplication of the elect while the congregation sings a litany of the saints, the laying on of hands by the bishop and by all priests present, a prayer of ordination, the investiture with stoles and chasubles, the anointing of hands and handing over of the bread and wine, and the fraternal kiss from Bishop Bradley. This was followed by the Liturgy of the Eucharist, including singing Berthier's "Eat this Bread" during Holy Communion. The recessional hymn was "Go to the World."
Mom and I went to a reception for Fr. Barry afterwards at St. Norbert's Church in Carrick. We left early, so that I could lector at the 5:15 Mass with Fr. Mike at the Oratory.
William, Marissa, and Beatrice visited for a bit late this afternoon after they had dined at a Mexican restaurant.
