SUN 01 AUG 2021 to TUE 31 AUG 2021

SUN 01 AUG 2021
M,D, and I then k and K enjoyed a hearty breakfast of fried rice, itlog, carne norte, and sardinas. We ate in sep-arate pod groups to minimize contact. All of us wore masks when not eating. (see 31 JULY 2021 post). We sat outside in the parklet to tell stories---about burial, and Auntie Mimang (k showed the video they made), then stories of katulong. D, M, and I watched the noon Mass on EWTN, whilst k and K went coffee foraging. Lunch was fresh Virginia crabs (male) with two kinds of rice, heirloom tomatoes (a Beefsteak variety and a Black variety), and sardines. Reminiscences with photos, focusing on Uncle Jet, ensued. k and K departed soon after 16.00, in order to be at the Novena in time this evening.
At the Zoomed Novena this evening, JO, k and K joined, as well.

MON 02 AUG 2021
Received via mail my office supplies. Quite pleased with the product.
Novena (almost forgot), Zoomed with D and M, as usual

TUE 03 AUG 2021
Met via Zoom with NMB on a SEED ask. Met with committee, had to leave early for Uncle Jet's Novena, then Bible study with Fr Mike Darcy and 10 participants for the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time (08 AUG 2021). I proclaimed the 2nd reading for our group (a new member, Sue, R's mom, read the 1st reading).

WED 04 AUG 2021
SH and I went for a walk to the fountain in front of the Frick Fine Arts building. Called the manufacturer about M's durable medical equipment. Phone calls today. Sent a birthday card to a coworker who is a nonagenarian (!) this month. Went grocery shopping at Palenkeng de Malaking Aguila in Shadyside, caught some sushi there, as well. D, M, and I joined the last night of Uncle Jet's ZOOMed Novena. JO and GMc were present; k was sending pictures to AA, who was visibly moved at the end of the Novena, after leading it for nine days.

THU 05 AUG 2021
After Jeopardy! with David Faber as guest host for only a week (the previous 2 weeks were guest hosted by LeVar Burton, of Reading Rainbow fame), I was bicycling for one hour and spoke with JAH by telephone.

FRI 06 AUG 2021
~
Went to pick up home items and a health care shipment for M at a drugstore in Shadyside, grocery shopping at Friendship/Shadyside, and picked up some ice cream and snacks at the drugstore in North Oakland.
Attended the Zoom Viewing/wake of Uncle Jet 6pm-8pm, Aug 6, 2021 06:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada).

SAT 07 AUG 2021
10:30 to 13.00 EDT- D, M, and I Zoomed on 2 computers to attend Uncle Jet's funeral Mass in MD (it started raining soon after the end of the Mass--the heavens were crying),and saw the funeral entourage drive via the Beltway (completely cleared/closed by the police, as a Presidential cortege...even the on-ramps were closed). Notable were the number of police cars ensuring the clear Beltway as the funeral procession wended its way from the church to the entombment site.

By 12.25 PM AA and family had arrived at the entombment building. Blessings were also said there, and a mini elevator was used to transport the heavy casket up to level 5 out of 6.

At the beginning of the formation of the funeral entourage, there was some discussion by the older relatives:
The brothers and family talked about CAR, who is now 99 years old. It was remarked that CCD lived to be 101 years old. Ligaya, Lalang's oldest apo, noted that her mom lived to be 98 5/6 years old. She herself has 6 apos.

We spotted k (wth K), GFA, RryA, GlnnA, AA, J'Ahn, and AmbrA.
Time to make lunch sandwiches!

Made some purchase for home/travel. Prepared the ice and mix-ins for halo halo, which D, M, and I enjoyed for dinner(!)

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

Pittsburgh groups trying to help Afghans as they flee country

The President of Afghanistan has fled the country and the Taliban has taken over. People are doing their best to make their way to the Kabul airport amid Taliban checkpoints throughout the country. There has been television footage showing people surrounding a cargo plane on the tarmac; people clinging to the outside of the aircraft. Later, we have been told that the problem is not getting Americans out of Kabul airport---it is getting them to Kabul airport.

Pittsburgh-based groups providing aid to Haiti

NBC News coverage from Port Au Prince shows people injured by the earthquake---especially children orphaned by the natural disaster---being evacuated by helicopter.

At bedtime I was sure to BFR.

We talked about some of our friends from work and briefly about our graduate school lab experiences.

Spoke with M-H and A about homeschooling when I reached my floor.
At bedtime I was sure to BFR.

SUN 22 AUG 2021
The televised Mass was celebrated by Fr Steve Palsa. There were 3 altar servers (the usual older teen, and Antonio, and the very young bespectacled boy). Alex DiC cantored, accompanied by the organist at the Beckerath console. Kimo Jung lectored, and the Eucharistic Ministers scheduled were Tom and Lynn Bainbridge and Judi Nocito.
Music included
Entrance Hymn- God of Life and God of Freedom (set to "Ode to Joy")
Communion Hymn- Where Love and Charity Abide, There God is Found
Communion Hymn of Praise- To Whom, Lord, Shall We Go?

Fr Steve's Homily focused on an earlier Gospel Reading from the 5-week-long series from John's Gospel that Jesus took, blessed, broke, and gave the loaves and fishes to the immense crowd before him. "I am the Bread of Life...I am the Living Bread of Life from Heaven," Jesus states, then gave us a banquet of Life---Himself.
Fr Steve then spoke about the International Eucharistic Congress, and then focused on his Grandmother's experience of it in Chicago in 1926. There were Masses celebrated throughout the city of Chicago in 200 languages on 20 JUNE 1926. On WED, there were 250,000 women? who attended Mass and there was an immense women's choir. The final mass of the Congress was like Heaven on Earth..."I am the Living Bread come down from Heaven."

I ordered some photo materials. After a lunch of adobo and vegetables (pepinos, camatis, maiz at beans), I helped M with her electronic correspondences.
