To the Mall

Maureen and I went to the Mall yesterday. We dined at Nordstrom's restaurant, I had (grilled pepper) chicken fideo soup. She had half a sandwich and salad. We also went to Squirrel Hill (to get extension cord and 9V batteries) and to enjoy coffees and a donut. In the rain we hunkered down under an umbrella and shower cap!

~~~~
Today I went home to have lunch, apple butternut squash soup. I took a nap, spoke with Grace from the left coast, took a nap, and spoke with Maureen. I made farfalle pesto pasta, and headed to Mom and Dad's. Hopefully I will get some reviewing in tonight.
Carnegie Museum of Art and Phipps Conservatory Winter Flower Show 2011
This evening Stacy and I took in the trees (50th Anniversary trees, "Solid Gold" was the theme this year), the Presepio, and the "Teenie Harris, Photographer: An American Story" exhibit at the Carnegie Museums. We sat, rapt, enveloped in Manchester Craftsman's Guild jazz written expressly for the exhibit, in the semi-darkness of the continuous slide shows (seven, I believe, in the gallery) and watched a wall of slides about "At Home," "Crossroads," and "Style" projected on the wall in front of us. We then moved into the next gallery to look at contact prints of his large format film from the last gallery, replete with computers in a bank in the center of the room and hand-held i-Phones with attached earphones to dial in the exhibition number to find out more information about select photographs.
The Phipps Winter Flower Show was nothing short of sparklingly dazzling. It was difficult to take photos in low-light conditions, resulting in 1/2 to 1 second exposures. We asked a passerby to take a photo of us with a tree decorated with multi-color lights in the background. We were very pleased with the outcome and with our visits tonight.
Stacy was kind to drop me off after our adventures.
Happy Holidays!
So, we've prepared a little holiday gift for each of the people on my support team, people who have been instrumental to me. I will deliver them after lunch today.
The weather has been light snow and very cold up until now, and will switch to rain (eek!) after noon today.
I will wear thick jeggings, sweatpants, and a velveteen long skirt with a T shirt, ribbed sweater, and thick red Irish fishermen's cardigan under my orange wool (lined) coat. Hopefully, this, paired with my taking the bus, will keep me from experiencing the "Tin Woodsman" effect.
Today's activity
Today I took a nap for a few hours. I also did a little preparation for my first week back to work. I also had lunch at home, followed by a little organization of my place and preparations for administrative folders and envelops for next semester. Handed out the last of my Christmas cards.
Headed over to Mom and Dad's for the late afternoon.
Boxing Day at Carnegie Science Center 2011
Yesterday Marissa and the children picked up Kelly and I to go to the Carnegie Science Center. The overflow lot was overflowing! We started at SportsWorks (where I surprised them with my karate-chopping velocity (at over 110 km/hr). The line to see the trains (with the new Mister Rogers neighborhood) wended its way through the length of the Robots exhibit. We ate our snacks in the brown bag lunch room. Boy, it was CROWDED!
William met up with us at Lolo and Lola's place, where Kelly and I went to see LP records, which she would like to listen to whilst she "does the dishes"! She was MOST excited about the "...You Are Special" LP and the one from Marietta entitled "The Battle for My Daddy's Soul" by The Blue Ridge.
(Dad just told me she made it safely home this morning...)
Merry Christmas 2011!
Kelly and I went to William's house to bake peanut butter and almond chocolate kiss cookies with the family last night.
We all went to Lolo and Lola's house after they two returned from 6 pm Mass. I wolfed down some shrimp eggroll and pancit before making my way to hand out Christmas cards at choir before practice at 8.30pm. Most of the music last night was:
Shopping for Christmas Meals
This morning Maureen and I went shopping for Christmas meal items. We started at the two French bakeries, one in Lawrenceville, and one in Millvale. We then went to Trader Joe's in Bakery Square, followed by an attempt to find parking at Whole Foods...then a stint at Giant Eagle Market District. We returned to my home with our booty.
I tucked away the grocery items and helped Mom and Dad with some computer issues, followed by reading and a nap. Time to write [some] Christmas cards!
M and M
Yesterday before choir practice I met with my friend V in Shadyside to review mitosis and meiosis concepts. She was firm, making me draw and explain each step of M & M, with the number of chromosomes, whether they are replicated or not, (sister) chromatids, and pairs of chromosomes. I did not look at the pictures and photos even once whilst doing this exercise. Then, she gave me a spoken exam with photos. Prophase was difficult to determine, but she said to look for the chromatin condensing into chromosomes to find that step.
Dinner and choir practice followed. Don started right on time and made us go through our paces, followed by an ordering of music in our folders. We were all psyched up in time for snacks, provided by Nancy C.
Visiting the Library
This morning I went to work to print out my email attachments from my bosses. I ran into Paul C, and we chatted (as I did with Melanie and Zuzana last time I was there). Upon request, I sent Zuzana an email about Christmas choir Mass times this year.
Stopped at the Carnegie Library, where I visited with my friends there, and picked up a reserve book I saw recommended. I said hi to Cathy L, who will be retiring as the head of the Music Department at the end of the year (she said to say hello to my friend S and to ask him when he will be coming to Pittsburgh), Don W, and Lisa R (with whom I sat down and chatted with), and Sheila.
Headed to Mom and Dad's, whence I brought some of my papers home in the rain, and then settled down for a long winter's nap.
Dad called, and asked me to store some food in my freezer. I came over to their home, to find it empty of them.
Beatrice's Holiday Program 2011
Yesterday Maureen and I went shopping in Bakery Square, East Liberty. We ran into Marissa and Solomon at Target. It was also fun to see items that are one-of-a-kind. After I got home, William and Dad met Mom and I for the trip to Beatrice's school.
Last night was the Holiday Program for Beatrice's school. The youngest children---of which Beatrice was a part---sang (some yelled) "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star," and "Frere Jacques/ Brother John." The program continued with older children singing such tunes as "Frosty the Snowman," and the fifth graders demonstrating their ballroom dance skills.
The whole family looked at Beatrice's art- and research work hanging on the walls of the school, and then we proceeded to the Scholastic book fair in the basement, where Solomon and Beatrice each picked out a gift book from Lolo and Lola...Beatrice initially wanted The Invention of Hugo Cabret, which she had already read, but settled for another, less weighty tome. A meal at Eat and Park followed. Both of the children were sans naps today, all day, and it showed.
Kelly's Birthday
Before Mass yesterday I went to choir practice, during which we sang to Don "Happy Birthday." After Mass Maureen and I went to Shadyside to shop for presents. We ran into my former student, CP, who remembered me. I then headed home and met up with Christina, who was picking up Regina and me for a birthday gathering at the Cheesecake Factory. Alina joined us afterwards.
Alina is job hunting and I said I would link her to someone I know on the East Coast for an informational interview. She gave me a lift to the Japanese buffet near Homestead, where I met Mom, Dad, and Kelly, who went to an informational meeting about green burial today (in West Virginia). William and his family joined us, and many photos of Kelly and the children were made. Kelly caught the last bus home yesterday.
~~~~~
Today, Mom and I went to run errands, including delivering to Dr. Larry's office workers their gifts, buying presents, and making donations. We even got burgers and fries for lunch, as well.

PAMS Christmas Party 2012

Meetings, Meetings,
Continuing Medical Education
(decorating parols during that time),

Missa at sunset
with decorated parols at the feet of Baby Jesus
a choir with keyboardist Caring I and violinist
Dad serving, Bening B as the lector, Dad reading the general intercessions,

Dinner with various dishes, including the lechon,
and desserts, too.

Gifts for the children with Mano Po,
rides home to our distant relatives and now-neighbors.

Back home to watch Kelly slooowly shrink up her Icelandic sweater on the ironing board, with steam iron and hair dryer...

Watching Kelly make Ohio peanut butter and chocolate buckeyes,
Eating two kinds of speculoos spread on apple slices,
More to come...

The Jazz Nutcracker

Maureen and I attended the Jazz Nutcracker last night. It was presented by the Point Park University Conservatory Dance Company at the Rockwell Theatre at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Duke Ellington in the 1950's composed a jazz rendition of "The Nutcracker Suite," including "The Magical Chinaman," "The Flapper and Dude," "The Arabesque Cookies" (after the Arabian Dancers), and "The Sugar Rum Fairy," all danced by the vaudevillan guests at Clara's theatrical family. Another recognizable Tchaikovsky cum jazz riff included "The Cabaret Awakens" at the beginning of Act II. The "It Don't Mean a Thing Swing" was a pure joyful jazz number right after the "Floreador Finale," followed by Clara's journey home.

The music was spectacular, the numbers beautifully crafted by Doug Bentz, a friend of Maureen's, and the dancers talented and appropriately in character, setting the mood and tone of each scene. The part of Clara last night was danced by Ashley Zimmerman, a ballet major who got the part over other students with less classical, more jazzier training. Bravi!

This rendition of the Nutcracker made me realize that this story is basically about two parents that hold a party, invite all their friends, and invite "Uncle" Drosselmeyer, who is an expert hypnotist, to the party. He hypnotizes the party, save sixteen-year-old Clara, whom he dances with, and to whom he gives a Nutcracker. The Uncle then encourages Clara to partner-dance with the now-life-sized wooden doll, and they go to a nightclub/cabaret to see recreations of the vaudeville acts of the party guests. The depiction of the Uncle was appropriately eerie at times, and only added to the overall effect.
~~~~~
Afterwards, Maureen and I went to Eat N Park for a burger and liver and onions.
Grades Posted!
Today I submitted my grades to the university and the uni computer system posted the rest of my grades. Now all the sections I taught this fall have their grades accessible online.
Maureen and I will go out for a new spin on a ballet tonight. The weather tonight is a big change from yesterday afternoon's walking weather: It went from the high fifties Fahrenheit to the twenties tonight.
BeaBea's Splinter...Walking
Slight emergency this morning...Mom called me to call Dad from church to help Beata with splinters in her foot (she can't walk). Solomon has a choral debut with his preschool this morning. O welcome to the holiday/ pre-Christmas season.
They just left to head to BeaBea. I've just finished my preparations for the grading meeting this lunchtime.
~~~~
Yesterday my friend V and I walked behind Phipps Conservatory and then took a 75 Ellsworth to a smoothie place where we enjoyed two medium "Vinnie del Roccoâ„¢" smoothies (with raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, orange sherbet/ ice) via a coupon Mom had found for me.

Choir practice went well last night...Judi provided snacks.

Mass, Wrap Christmas Presents, Fun...

This morning Dad and I attended morning Mass. I arrived before him, and Fr. Steven Palsa celebrated Mass, Nancy K served, Ken provided music ministry from the altar's portative organ, and Bob K. lectored. I chatted with his wife Carmella before and after Mass.

It was time for Mom's eye drops (BLahps!!) when I returned after picking up a catering menu this morning from North Craig Street. I spent a good portion of the morning wrapping immediate family members' presents (except for J O's family, which were sent out last week). Kelly called, and I directed her to Mom and Dad, who are doing medical mission work today.

Stopped in at Work

This morning at about 10.30 I stopped in at work to print out the student rosters, print out directions for grade-entering, and more.

I will enjoy a slow afternoon.
~~~~~
I stopped into work this afternoon, as well, to print out the PowerPoint presentations for the first four to five units for next semester. It should be fun studying next semester materials....More lecturing for us than this semester...
Mom and I did the laundry this evening, at least four loads of their clothes.
Finished Scoring, Mailing, Nap, Dinner with William's Family
Dad and I attended Mass for St. Lucy this morning. Fr. Raymond Utz celebrated the Mass, John DeF served, Don provided the music ministry from the loft, Nancy K lectored, and Sally was the Eucharistic Minister. Fr. Utz gave a homily on the changes in the New Roman Missal Translation (into English). He mentioned that the liturgical changes are difficult for "priest and people...Archbishop and acolyte." I saw Rosemarie and Kevin after Mass. Rosemarie lost her sister the first week of December. "It's hard to find Peace, but you must pray for it," I told her.
After spending over an hour and a half on the phone, I sent my check in...
I had lunch with Mom and Dad, took a nap, and did some studying of the beginning of the next semester. Then we all picked up William at work and then joined the rest of his family for taco night at the Mexican restaurant.
17/18 completed grading practical finals!
After Maureen and I went to Shadyside and Bakery Square for gifts for coworkers. After I enjoyed a dark chocolate mousse made by Tina P's mom, I graded two more parts of the exam.
I can now say I'm almost done (17/18) grading!
I am 5/6 completed with grading finals!
Just finished grading (but NOT scoring) 15/18ths of all the final practical exams that I had administered last week.
Now time for Mom's eye drops. She and I have also been email buddies since her first eye surgery in March.
Therese of Lisieux
I watched the last half of a movie about the life of Saint Therese of Lisieux (2004) with Mom on EWTN. As usual, we diagnosed her and her treatment (or lack thereof) in the nineteenth century. We also watched "The Making of Therese" afterwards.
I have found rose petals in the most unusual places---in the narrow, winding stairwell leading to the choir loft in Killarney, Ireland; on the sidewalk of Hot Metal Street on the Southside of Pittsburgh; and numerous other places where there were no flowers nearby, nor should there be flowers nearby ever. Yes, those were instances of Therese ("The Little Flower") making her presence known. She has a special place in Mom's heart.
I told Mom that I don't think I would make a very good nun, as I have problems with obedience. "Obedience issues" I might call that.
13/18 finished grading
After returning from Beata's dance class and after dinner I graded some more practical finals. I am 13/18ths finished grading (but not yet scoring). I am, however, adding page scores as I go...
Beatrice's Dance Class
After lunch and before picking up Mom's medicine in Shadyside Dad, Mom, and I joined William's family (upon an invitationn from Marissa) at Beatrice's dance class. As per usual, she was absent for the photo (taken usually around Thanksgiving), but she is a good imitator and her teacher, her assistant, and the accompanist are all greatly talented at engaging all of the students. Beatrice's mirror dance partner was Sonora. They have learned the two first ballet positions, chassee moves, and basics of modern dance.
We all went to Vanilla for cupcakes afterwards. Our selections ranged from Fudge Chocolate, Chocolate Buttercream, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Red Velvet, to Cinnamon Scone and Pistachio Almond Nougat!! Solomon finally got his wish for a red cupcake like Beatrice's. I swung around to pick up Mom and Dad after our cupcake interlude.
Half Way Finished Grading, Fall 2011
This morning about a half hour ago I finished grading (but NOT scoring) HALF of the stations on all the exams I administered this week.
What a great feeling! I am ahead of my schedule...
Today, Mom and I will go shopping for items for the Christmas party this week.
Immaculate Conception, 2011
This morning I read at Mass. Fr. Steven Palsa celebrated, John DeF. served, Don played the organ, Christina was our cantatrice, and I read at Mass.
Afterward, I had breakfast back at the ranch, and then called Dad and Mom as she waited for a procedure. I soon left to administer my last final practical exam for this semester.
Lots to be thankful for...
Read the news today, o boy
No Sandusky on my campus (as far as I know),
No Virginia Tech-type shooting on my campus.
No, none of that. Not today. Reasons to be thankful!
A Catholic View of the Occupy Movement
Dad provided me transportation to the Newman Center to carpool with Kevin, Tom, and Ruth to Saturday's Truth on Tap at Gullifty's. Most of us enjoyed desserts, and some of us enjoyed appetizers, beers or other drinks, and entrees. Fr. Josh organized the event, and Damon McGraw, a PhD candidate at Notre Dame University who is studying at the Newman Institute, spoke on "A Catholic View of the Occupy Movement" and led the post-talk discussion.
Damon spoke on Catholic Social Teaching, the Pontifical Council of Justice and Peace, How CST addresses the issues of social and economic inequality and government policies related to these issues, and basic Catholic theological principles. I think the discussion that started with one grad student (asking, "If I have two cloaks, and I give one to someone who has none, and they burn it, what do I do?") and led to the discussion of the Pater Noster (line, "forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,") fueled a dessert mate to state to everyone at our end of the table that we all live in excess.
I'd like to think that I try to live within my modest means, which makes me content.
Hugo
Yesterday we spent time getting ready for the final practical exams next week. Afterwards, Charles stopped by to pick up me, then the whole rest of the gang to go to the movie Hugo. (It turned out that we had to pick up neither William, who was sans famille for the week, nor his coworker Christine, as they also drove. So,) we spent some time chit chatting whilst in the vicinity of the sparkly lights of Oakland. The weather hovered around the low 40's Fahrenheit, and so it was good to walk. We picked up Susan from downtown exercise, and headed to meet William and Christine at the movie theater in Homestead.
I knew very little about the movie Hugo before viewing it: Something about an orphan who spends his time winding the clocks of a Paris train station. The movie was more than engaging---enchanting, as Susan put it---with magical moments, and moments during which I found myself covering my head. William had read the book when it had been released several years ago, and Beabs has read it, as well.
Incidentally, I found myself spending part of the beginning of the movie trying to figure out if it were filmed in French and dubbed into English, as I did not know Martin Scorcese had been a producer of the film. Additionally, part of the charm of the movie was the use of unusual words which had French/Latin etymology such as the Inspector's use of the word "apprehend," similar to the French verb apprendre. The acting by the two leads---both children---was nothing short of delightful.
I lost track of time during the movie...
Bible Study, Heinz Chapel Choir, Pastoral Council
Wednesday I attended Bible Study/ Scripture readings with Father Drew (on his saint's day!) We read Isaiah 40: 1-5, 9-11 ("Comfort, comfort my people"), 2 Peter 3:8-14, and Mark 1:1-8. (Should have waited to sing Comfort, Comfort O my People till the SECOND Sunday of Advent...)
Last night Joe, Tina, and I made the jaunt to meet up with Don to the annual faculty concert of the Heinz Chapel Choir. John Goldsmith directed, as usual, with Steven Anisko for organ 'ludes. They performed
Organ prelude: Lullaby on a Polish Carol (Robert S. Lord)
Choir (from the loft):
O Come, O Come Emmanuel (Medieval chant, arr. by Goldsmith)
Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming (German, Praetorius/Sandstrom)
All sang:
O Come, all Ye Faithful (two verses)
All Sang:
two verses of What Child Is This
The Winter's Night (America, Nicholas Myers)
Let It Snow! (20th Century America, Cahn-Styne/Richards)
Jesus, the Light of the World (American folk hymn, arr. G.D. Elderkin), with a male octet from the choir
All Sang:
Two verses of Deck the Halls
Organ Postlude:
Litanies (Jehan Alain)
~~~~~

Don remained in Heinz Chapel for an event, and Joe, Tina, and I went out into the dark fresh night to find our ways to the Rectory (I for a meeting) and home (they for dinner).
~~~~~
How great was it to sit betwixt Joe and Tina as they happily hummed tunes (especially the organ prelude) along with the performance!
...quietly murmured descriptions of the next song by Don (to Joe) and myself (to Tina)...
...the whooshing sound of the wind during the premiere performance of "Dawn"...
...the haunting soprano voice of Shawna Kelly, her sound echoing up to the rafters of the chapel during Coventry Carol...
...humming and zumming the American folk hymn, "Jesus, the Light of the World," a favorite of Tina and mine, as we gently swayed in our pew....
Now, THAT's a concert!
The NEW (English) translation...First Sunday of Advent, 2011
It was a new liturgical year this past weekend, starting with the anticipated Masses on Saturday. With it, it brought IMMENSE changes in the liturgy of the Mass for Americans. There were laminated prayer cards in the pews, and everyone in choir had a handout, "Changes in the Parts of the People in the Order of Mass in the Roman Missal, Third Edition," from the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' website.
Several times in choir we were sprung,"The Lord be with you,"
and we responded (no, not "and also with you.")
"and with your Spirit,"
which are about half the congregation's responses that changed.
This Sunday at noon Father Josh from the Oratory said Mass, and I strongly recall a strong congregational response to the greeting. I also recall Fr. Josh saying before the Gospel reading,
"The Lord be with you,"
and the congregation responding in unison:
Half or so responding: "and also with you..(a beat)..and with your Spirit."
and the balance responding, in unison: "and with your Spirit."
Followed by an audible giggle that arose from the congregation, to the choir loft and rafters.
We, the choir, sang
Entrance: O Come, O Come Emmmanuel
Kyrie (litany tone)
Psalm 80 (M. Guimont)
Berthier's Gospel Alleluia Acclamation
Preparation of the Gifts, Remember Christians All (T. Ravenscroft)
Acclamations from the Community Mass (R. PRoulx, version 2010)
Communion: Wait for the Lord (J. Berthier) and
Comfort, Comfort O My People (C. Goudimel)
Recessional: The King Shall come When Morning Dawns
A Joyous Mass, and Dad was the Eucharistic Minister for the Choir Loft!
