TUE 01 AUG 2023 to THU 31 AUG 2023

TUE 01 AUG 2023
Right before my alarm went off, A("L")A called and chatted for over 90 minutes. She had a request of me, which is difficult, re: my upcoming visit to her bonny city. I had my group work this afternoon; completed my multi-week tile project. Got vitamins and mailed an RMA item for D. Walked back. Total ~ 1mile.

WED 02 AUG 2023
Some telephone calls re: DME,  and uncertainty about museum visitor numbers for our group at the Field Museum. JK at FM helped us to straighten things out for our group, and has been quite accommodating.

Afternoon breaking news:
re: the United States of America v. Robert Bowers case
Pittsburgh synagogue shooter Robert Bowers sentenced to death | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Perhaps the sentence reflects not just the fact that he murdered people. It's the awful, cold-blooded, premeditated, hateful way in which he did it, and the AR-15 weapon he used. Note that Judy Clarke, the criminal defense attorney, reminded the jury that just one vote for life, would mean the court would sentence her client to life. There were none.
But
Pittsburgh is Stronger than Hate.

Spent the afternoon signing into email and updating things. Also helped M make 2 humungous loaves of her splendiferous banana cake. Listened to favorite Beatles ballads....

WED 03 AUG 2023
Appointment with specialist at the beginning of the business day. Call a DME company to iron things out. Lunch, then a DME appointment for a separate company in the South Side. Brought M and D to their medical appointment in Oakland. Dinner seated in Shadyside: Burgers, fries, and a shake. Finalize my Draft of a document. Helped M with Libby books from the public library. Time for language lessons!

16.40- Over 5-hour standoff current with an active shooter and SWAT team in Garfield. Prayers for all involved. Technical equipment, including drones (some of which were shot down) and robots, were deployed to determine position and status of the suspect. The standoff started ~11.00, when Allegheny County Sheriff's deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice to the suspect, William Hardison, Sr. The recording of his son, a truck driver, saying that he would speak to his father if (they) thought it might help.
I had contacted my friend, NMB, and she said that things were clearing out after the lockdown, and she was just leaving the STEAM education center at ~1700.
~17.08 the suspect was pronounced deceased. Really sad ending to what may be the gentrification of a neighborhood, leaving long-time residents nowhere to go.
~17.50 The Pittsburgh Police Chief Scirotto reported that there were no neighbors injured, no police, no SWAT team members, neither FBI nor ATF shot, despite the hundreds-to-thousands-bullet exchange/melee.
The story made the NBC Nightly News at 18.30 today (along with the apparent assasination of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the leader of the Russian Wagner group against Ukraine).

Six attendees at the Zoom yoga facilitated by SCN. Went to the corner K-store for garlic. Had snacks and a very short nap before heading to rehearsal for Bridget and Matt's nuptial Mass at the Cathedral. During the Mass, there were 6 highly visible celebrants, and 2 additional celebrants. Frs Adam Potter and Dan Walsh were on the roster of celebrants. They were visible during the incantation of the Litany of the Saints, as well as during the proclamation of the Gospel, respectively.

After rehearsal, we greeted Matt and Bridget in the parking lot. I joked later to D and M that I got the groom to split from the side of the bride right before the wedding (!- he tucked my gift for them on the bus). ~~~~~
Headed to the catered Mexican banquet from BF and MMoyles, of which ~15-20 of us choristers partook. MoGo shared the photo of her new granddaughter, of whose name I approved. RD regaled us with stories. A fun time was had by all.

SUN 27 AUG 2023
Lectored at the Noon Mass. Fr John Pfannenstiel celebrated the Mass, with Deacon Tom Berna assisting. JP and his sisters were the servers. Nancy and Gerry were Eucharistic ministers. After Mass, I got D's attention, and we sat at a table with MaRo, DoSc, and NoDe. Saw neighbors, including El and Aur, Ca and Mo, and Ale'. JJ, DM, and BG were grilling and serving. I was off guessing the gummy worm jar by 3 worms.
D and I brought food home for M, who stayed home for good, personal health reasons.

MON 28 AUG 2023
JH texted me that she was at the museum with her brother's family. I met her and her niece VaSc in Bird Hall, then we went to B, where we saw PaMc, MaZu, and others. Back up to the Bird Song exhibit (time for photos and relaxing), North American Wildlife, Botany Hall, flying Pterosaur skeletons' photos, Crocodiles, the Giraffe, and then they and I parted for Scaife Hall and for the All-staff Gathering, respectively.
Our table was predominantly Education folks---Jodi and Jen (happy campers), Joann and Pat H, myself, and also those from other departments: Sue Mc, Pam Le.., and someone from Marketing. We all were chatting away happily, not necessarily ignoring the list of questions plopped in mid-table, just enjoying each other's company. Dinner was great---mixed greens salad punctuated by tomatoes, pasta laden with creamy cheese, pulled pork sliders (yum!), and other, chicken, dishes. Dessert was brownies and chocolate chip cookies sprinkled with berries, as well as this slices of watermelon. I trundled back home---noticed the large poster of Gina Wi at the bus stop. Due to a lack of a cell phone, I waited until tomorrow to snap a shot of that to email to her.
