This Week Sleep

These are the times I have arisen this week...Today I arose at 7 (but awoke and went back to sleep at 5).
Monday Dad drove Mom and I to get our hair/s styled. We went shopping afterwards (I got a small calculator), and had lunch at the Chinese buffet.
Tuesday I spoke with my health coach in the morning. Mom, Dad, and I went to the Waterfront to update our cell phones. Maureen and I met Jeff to celebrate her birthday over BBQ chicken pizza. We had fun chatting.
Wednesday I had an orientation meeting with Laura D's office. I met with Stacy at 19.00 hours for smoothies. We also went to the Frick Fine Arts building to bask in the setting sunlight. Last night, Mom and Dad brought home summer sweet corn from Robert.

First Saturday, June 2010
So, because I had purchased a number of eggs this week. I ate breakfast at home, and took a long nap. Ate lunch with Mom and Dad, and joined up with Maureen for a walk post-rain to Shadyside. In the pouring, rivulet-bearing rain we ended up at the bagel shop, where we had snacks of bagels.
Back to her car, then off to the bookstore for a look at hair magazines, a journal/ notebook and a gift.

Rainy, Rainy beginning of the week
Monday and Tuesday have been rainy, rainy days. Cool, too (~50-60 Fahrenheit). Monday I ran some errands downtown. I walked from Heinz Hall to near the Kaufmann's Clock to catch a 71A bus home. Tuesday I picked up Mom and Dad from Mom's doctor's appointment. We drove to the hairdressers, where she received a stylish cut. We made an appointment for about six weeks from now. I also went grocery shopping, and ran into Kathy L from the Carnegie. We chatted for a bit.
Then, dinner last night and meet up with Susan at folk dancing to hear the Balkan group play music whilst the folk dancing continued. I danced intermittently from 19.30-22.00.
This morning, I went to the Newman Center to attend study of this Sunday (Pentecost)'s readings. The event is "on vacation" until early June. Karina arrives from the airport, I'll pick her up from the bus stop this afternoon!

So, it was a beautiful afternoon yesterday when I met up with Karina at the bus stop. We loaded her bags into the car, and ensured her safe arrival at home.
Mom and I dined in the Strip District (sans Dad, who had a tummy flu) for dinner, and then I dropped Mom (and our leftovers) off, to pick up Karina for a Young Adult Church event in Shadyside. (We were half an hour late).
We retrieved her car, then walked on Walnut Street in the shopping district, then called Maureen to join us around the time her dance class lets out. She joined us for a stroll, then all three of us ladies went grocery shopping in Shadyside (Late!).

Hair Cut Day January 2010
This morning was a haircut day for Mom and I. Dad came along, and we went grocery shopping afterwards, to the bank, to the Chinese buffet for lunch, to Sears to return a suitcase, to a department store behind the mall, to the fabric store for ribbons for the certificates for the mission participants, then to a clothing store on the way home.
It was the first day back at Choir since the Martin Luther King Cathedral celebration on the tenth of this month. All went well, many of us returned our seasonal sheet music, and Jess prepared berry crisp with vanilla mousse atop it for snacks.
A day off from walking.

Hair Cut Day November 2009
Yesterday I finished grading my quizzes from last week. I'll drop them off today for the students to pick up before the Thanksgiving holiday.
Yesterday Mom and I watched "Dancing with the Stars" with Donny Osmond, Kelly Osbourne, and Mya. We commented heavily on their performances.
This morning I'll go for some bloodwork, then Mom and I will go for our hair cuts, too.

This morning I dropped off the graded quizzes, notified my students by email of the papers, entered the grades on my electronic grade sheet, and went for bloodwork. I saw some of Dad and Mom's neighbors, as well as Janice from the development office where I used to work, and we exchanged current information.
I returned to work to print my electronic grade sheet, enter my (third) recommendation for a student applying to a PharmD program this semester, and enjoyed my walk back.

Went for my hair appointment with Mom (Dad came along, too). As she finished cutting my hair, Mom and Dad took off to run some errands. Phyllis came in, we greeted each other, and commented on how long it's been since we have seen each other. Mom and Dad arrived shortly thereafter. Our stylist had purchased a choir CD, and we all chatted for a while. Mom will stop by Phyllis and Gene's home next Monday.
I typed in the change to Mom and Dad's Victorian party this season, and emailed Mom. I took the bus to work and mailed some student athlete recommendations. I spoke with Zusana for a while, then took care of some printing for the lab next week.

Haircut, August 2008
Mom and I got haircuts yesterday afternoon. We went to run errands and to go food shopping, too.
When we returned, Maureen and I went to Jo Ann Fabrics to get her organizers for her students' classroom supplies. We went to an office supply store for binder clips, and went to Eat N Park for cool drinks (milkshake and water). We stopped at Ross Park Mall for window shopping, and headed home.

Today I took an easy morning...typed a bit, then relaxed in bed. Had lunch with Mom and Dad, then after a nap joined Marissa, Beatrice, and Solomon for some story telling in Squirrel Hill. The volunteer's name was Jan, and she read library books with toys and puppets to help to tell the stories. She did a finger play about five fishies, too. They enjoyed the cinnamon graham crackers, and we all went to Cold Stone Creamery for ice cream and sorbet afterwards.

My Goal: Debut Today at Mass
I am excited about my afternoon today. My goal today is to make my "debut" (as my friend Alroy stated last year/last hip) at Mass. I will bring my own pillow to sit upon (not as highly decorated as my sit-upon from Brownies), and sit close to the front to minimize movement during Communion. I will either do steps or make my way all the way around to the other side of the building to the elevator.
After, I will take Mom and Dad out to treat them to lunch---as tradition goes---if they will allow me.

We DID go to Mass, where I walked up the eastern transept steps (with mom's help), and sat through the service... We also went to lunch at the Mexican restaurant in northeast Oakland: The location we went to right before Mom and Dad brought Ornella and I to the airport for our trip to Ireland in July 2007.

Inauguration Day 2009
Today, I lectored at a memorial Mass the day after Lolo's birthday. Fr. Breier celebrated, Matt was altar server, and Ken played the Wicks organ. Fr. Breier wore a red vestment from the Philippines, and we talked about his relative who served as a priest in Japan who had a cousin who was archbishop in the Philippines, and was a doctor, surgeon, dentist, pharmacist, and undertaker. In the POW camp in Manila (which was probably the University of Santo Tomas campus) he was quite useful to the Japanese who were occupying the city. He probably knew Lolo, who treated troops from America, Japan, and the Philippines.
We collected eyeglasses at the Fifth Avenue entrance of church, then departed for haircuts (with Dad driving and our making a stop at McDonald's for breakfast). Mary Jane had the television on, we watched pre-inauguration pomp in which the powers-that-be and the powers-that-had-been pass through the portals of the White House before their ride to the Capitol Building and the Inauguration.
We ladies commented on Michelle Obama's dress ("It's very difficult for most of us women to carry off a yellow dress," "I sure hope she's layering a long silk shirt under that suit"). We also hurried home in time to catch Dianne Feinstein continue to make introductory remarks before the official Inauguration Program. We heard Gabriela Montero (piano forte), Itzhak Perlman (violin), Yo Yo Ma (cello), and Anthony McGill (clarinet) play a piece by John Williams commissioned for the event, Joe Biden sworn in as Vice President, Aretha Franklin sing "My Country 'Tis of Thee" and Barack Obama take the oath of office. Elizabeth Alexander read her poem, "Praise Song for the Day." How very moving, the whole event. The military choral group sang, and we decided to go out for lunch.
Mom, Dad, and I had lunch at the Japanese sushi buffet. Quite delicious. We enjoyed vanilla, red bean, and green tea ice cream after.
We worked on dad's curriculum vita and on Mom & Dad's correspondence after that. We also watched the Inaugural parade, during which we commented that some of the onlookers in the reviewing stands looked positively COLD.

Mom's Haircut, Teeth cleaning
Dad, Mom, and I went to Penn Hills for Mom's haircut. We also went shopping, donated, and had lunch there. Mary Jane styled Mom's hair quite well. We discussed hip replacements as well as searching for scholarships for her daughter.
After taking my prophylactic antibiotics, I went to the dentist's office for my six-month cleaning. A new person cleaned my teeth today--Theresa. We chatted about Broadway theatre in Pittsburgh.

Cleaning/Organizing/Purging IV
Yesterday morning and evening, Mom and I spent 1 + 3.5 hours cleaning, organizing, and purging clothes, papers, gifts, books, jewelry, and hair clips in my master's bedroom. The room looked absolutely marvelously better when we were finished. Time for two ES Tylenols...
Physical therapy went by yesterday without a hitch, while keeping the exercise level the same as Monday.
Dad and I went to an early Mass to celebrate the memorial birthday of my granddad. Fr. Breier celebrated the Mass, Bob H. lectored, and Ken provided music ministry.

Take It Easy
After yesterday, when Mom and I ran errands at stores and at the bank after getting our hair styled, I felt sore. It almost felt as if I had a tear, when I moved certain ways. Time for a rest, time for my Tylenol. (I think I overdid it.)
Sometimes I think I'm in a new stage of healing---it feels as if my muscles are knitting together, they feel delicate. I still feel as if I have a dressing or something in my back pocket when I lie down. This is probably my experience of swelling.
Today I will spend my day reading and writing.

Hair Cut, July 2008
Mom and I have hair appointments with Mary Jane today to get our hair cut. I am excited, it has been a while since I last visited her. My hair has got considerably longer, and right after I left the hospital fell out in small clumps as I brushed or washed it...probably the stress of it all.
It doesn't fall out at such a high rate now, but this week Dad made a comment reminiscent of Kathe', the lab manager from graduate school: She'd be sweeping the lab floor and noting that she saw a LOT of my hair on the floor (I was the only brunette in the group; all the rest of the lab clan were blondes). We came to the conclusion that I was under a lot of stress and losing my hair...
I just hope that this is not the beginning of my hair really going white. :n(
We all look forward to our trips to Mary Jane's salon. Phyllis recommended her to us, and still visits her in her old neighborhood. Marissa has also gone to her, and blogged on the event.
