Resolving Issues---End of the Summer 2010

The end of this week (Thursday through Saturday) consisted of resolving issues, including health insurance, car maintenance, donating excess jackets, and loading my syllabus onto my (still unavailable) class. I went out with Maureen to the library and then we shared fries in Fox Chapel. I've been writing more, as well.

I started a great book recommended to me by Liz--Outliers, by Malcolm Gladwell. I finished reading half the book in one evening, it is so compelling. The subtitle is "The Story of Success." He has written The Tipping Point and Blink as well.

I've been catching up on communication (email) and writing more essays, as well.

I just finished a big double bar of chocolate from this summer (with almond and cashew paste).

First Saturday, June 2010

So, because I had purchased a number of eggs this week. I ate breakfast at home, and took a long nap. Ate lunch with Mom and Dad, and joined up with Maureen for a walk post-rain to Shadyside. In the pouring, rivulet-bearing rain we ended up at the bagel shop, where we had snacks of bagels.

Back to her car, then off to the bookstore for a look at hair magazines, a journal/ notebook and a gift.

6 Hands Jewelry

Today I took care of quite a bit of correspondence in the morning. Maureen, Karina, and I went to the Waterfront to the craft store. Maureen selected a number of beads for a tri-partite bracelet for her sister. It had a water/leaf/nature theme to it, with colors in the green-blue-aqua family. We each made a strand for the bracelet, which were then wound around the others, and fashioned into a bracelet.

"6 Hands Jewelry"! I declared, high-tenning my crafty partners.

Donuts played a role in the evening, as well!

Ascension Thursday 2010

Last night I helped Maureen write letters for her school. We had fun looking at Facebook afterwards.

This morning I went to morning Mass for the Ascension, and did my winter laundry/wash.

This afternoon, I met with a student to look over the final results, went home for a nap, and will have a snack.

Maureen and I walked to the burgers and fries joint for dinner after she attended six o'clock Mass. We enjoyed our meal, walked back in the cool dusk, commenting on how this is what it would be like an hour later in London at midsummer. I met up with Mom and Dad, spent some time chatting with them, and then they are attending Mass nearby.

It's quiet here in Mom and Dad's place, now. I think I'll have a glass of juice. (Red).

Just got in touch with Pratima at the top of the hour. Ellen's been wanting to talk to her, as well.

Walking Day

Walked to and from my appointment this gray cool morning. I enjoyed lunch with Mom and Dad, a nap, and job hunting. Also took care of some administrative correspondence.

Maureen and I saw the rainy scape right before we decided to walk. She's at dance class now, and I'll join her later this evening for writing correspondence for her school.

Early on a (Non-Choir) Sunday, January 2010

So, I'm up early (probably to go back to sleep after writing this...) on this Sunday morning, a rare Sunday during choir season when I don't have practice or choir.

Yesterday, after noon Mass Mom, Dad, and I went out for lunch after a visit to Staples and Tuesday Morning. A long nap followed, and then Maureen and I went for a walk (reverse route as for Friday). It took us ~twenty minutes, less than half an hour. We chatted in the lobby for a while (also to get dry---it's been pouring all day).

Up Late, Up Early January 2010

I was up late last night taking care of correspondence and chatting with my aunties in California (one visiting from the Nederlands). Also watching the newsprogram with Mom about the story of Sean Goldman, a little boy who has been through a lot with his family. I said to Mom that there are so many people who have been through a lot, as well, in trafficking incidents every day.

So I went to bed vv late last night and awoke early (~7.00) this morning. Mom said to be sure to wake up late. I'm going back to bed now to sleep off the sleepiness.

Phone Calls

This morning, there were lots of phone calls to catch up for the New Year. I worked on some correspondence until midnight last night, as well. Also called the store to check on stuff I need to pick up.

I'll take care of some more paperwork and correspondence this morning, then have lunch chez Mom and Dad.

After a couple of appointments and errands, I went in to work to print out a couple of documents, emails.

I then proceeded to go home to take a nap, and was awakened by a return call re: the Bible study times. Maureen and I chatted for a bit, and I fell asleep soon after.

So, with all these odd hours, I'm up now. I'll hit the sack again shortly. I'm probably still up because of the light from the computer.

Responsive/Responsible

I have a friend who does not like to email. I personally LIKE to email. Which leaves me with a friend who is NON-responsive to my emails. Which also looks (to the casual bystander) that my friend is
NOT responsive
NOT relating
NOT responsible.

This is disconcerting to me
because I know my friend is very
kind and
thoughtful
(in my presence)
to a trivial detail level.

How confusing!

It's Published!

On December 23rd, 2009 the Encyclopedia of Asian American Issues Today was published. I was lead/co-author on an article which we worked on for about a year, and did minor edits on this fall. I credit my editor and co-authors with doing a fine job of writing and editing the article.

This week I updated my social networking site to reflect the above changes, and am updating this web log.

It's an overview / review article on mental health in the Asian American community. I couldn't have done it without the help of librarians in the (now-defunct) Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic Library, and the resources in the library itself. I also have to thank Prof. Fabrega for lending me a textbook of cultural psychiatry. And, of course, I have to thank my family and support network for making this possible.

Gyros, October 2009

For dinner tonight Nancy, Karina, Maureen, and I went for gyros in Oakland. It is Homecoming Weekend at the University of Pittsburgh, so despite the rainy weather, there were lots of students and alumni wandering about Oakland. We enjoyed our gyros, salads, and hummus dip, as well as a discussion by the proprietor about how he grows and selects hot peppers, spices, cucumbers, and other produce. He also shared his prayer rug with us. What a man of Faith! He was intrigued by Nancy's computer pen, and wants to get some for his children.

We went for ice cream sundaes, iced mocha frappe, and hot chocolate afterwards. What a lovely evening out with the girls!

Second Day of G-20 in Pittsburgh: Police Presence

Before 11.15 am today I:

Read Haggai 2:1-9 and Psalm 43:1-4.
Had trouble getting into the church building
Said the Rosary and Chaplet with a group of people (including Dad, Oscar, his daughter Christina, Maureen, and Lisa C.)
Picked up my wallet, and walked with Maureen to Pamela's, Oakland
Saw < 10 potential protesters at Schenley Plaza
Saw foot police in dark colors in a group of ~20 on Bellefield Avenue heading south
Saw firemen from Sewickley travelling west
Saw PAT buses marked SPECIAL bearing troopers
Saw a lot of police presence, in general

Sat directly under a broken and boarded window at Pamela's
Enjoyed my breakfast with Maureen, at a lively restaurant, next to gentlemen who ordered takeout, and single people, some carrying soft-sided luggage. Some of those dining looked as if they might be protesters

We met up with a man taking a photo of the damage at Pamela's
Saw a woman taking a photo of the damage at American Apparel
Saw McDonald's boarded up with plywood

There was a white tent over the W entrance of the Cathedral of Learning
Stopped in a computer lab on campus
Saw well-dressed foreign visitors from Japan visiting the Cathedral of Learning
Saw a convoy of motorcycle police traveling north on Bellefield at the same time as we
Saw a platoon of county mounted police travelling south on Bellefield
saw the Mellon Institute had "Falling Objects" tape around the front entrance
Saw bicycle police at the NE corner of the Mellon Institute building
Saw Fr. Barry and Fr. Kim walking about

Generally, there were fewer U Pitt-looking students on Forbes Avenue,
Fewer pedestrians,
less foot traffic,
less vehicular traffic ("It's eerie," said Maureen)
no parked cars for stretches.

I think I'll do my laundry this weekend...

Recipes

William called yesterday offering to email me a hypertext link to a site with trial software for recipe writing/recording. I haven't received the email yet, but I've started writing ingredients and approximate amounts of ingredients, as well as process for the recipes for today's meals. They have included:

baked beans (w/ rice, w/ hot dogs on the side) and with pineapple
Mom's steak (w/ sauteed onion and mushroom, w/ rice) and with pineapple

Sunny Sunday Afternoon

I'm typing while listening to a Tchaikovsky piece on the radio from Balanchine's Jewels ("String Serenade" Serenade for strings [or piano, 4 hands] in C major, Op. 48). The late afternoon summer sun is streaming into the west-facing window. After a three-hour-long nap, this typing with a slight delay in appearance on the computer screen is fine---a slow, sleepy end-of-day.

Chatting with Christoph about his research is enlightening and makes me realize how common across the sciences and health sciences research issues are.

Dinner follows, and a sit in front of Mom & Dad's television set...a movie with Debra Messing and the beginning of Titanic...a check of my email, with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra playing "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Mussorgsky as orchestrated by Ravel, conducted by Leonard Slatkin.

Preparing for Jenny's Arrival

After Luce departed early Monday morning, I took a brief nap. Mom, Dad, and I went to Greentree for the Chinese Buffet, and went straight to Dr. Pat's office to pick up supplies for the medical mission. We stopped at Tuesday Morning for some shopping, and I went home and did some laundry and dishes in between a cool lemonade break with Maureen. I dropped off the pill cutter for mom late Monday night.

Tuesday I lectored and also attended the evening Mass with Maureen. I had my physical therapy in the afternoon, as mentioned in my previous entry.

Today I went Downtown to pick up shoes I had dropped off for repair, went to Mom & Dad's, then picked up my meds and ran into Jenn, who will meet with Jenny Friday. Spoke with Jenny, some other friends, and took a bus home. SR gave me little magnetic words!

I must vacuum and empty the dishwasher before tonight is over...

Checkin' email

Picked up S from the airport this afternoon, amidst rain on the way home.

S. and I discussed issues of my journal from 1990 after a nap/grading (5/6) session. Now we are checking our email before dinner...in the 24 hour computer lab on campus.

I said that there is much useless, detailed information that I wrote in my journal twenty years ago...but it was fun to read. We talked about recording/documenting our teaching to students; how it is very difficult to find the time to document our pedagogy. I shared the Acid Rain Teacher's Guide, as well as the Schubert Lieder and we talked about Les Chansons de Faure, the first-ever CD I purchased.

We talked about the C-leg and how it works (its computerized mechanism) on the way to campus.

We compromised on the rate of walking, as S strides faster and I stride shorter, in order to accomodate our individual handicaps.

We talked about swimming, and other exercise, and voice lessons.

Up Early

So, I'm up early today---listened to the morning interview of Lois Lowry on the early Sunday radio show, headed to Mom & Dad's to do a few errands and to review my work for next week, and to check my email (nothing new since late last night)...I think about the friends and family I spoke with yesterday: Auntie Chi and Uncle Sonny, Luce (and her upcoming visit), Nancy (and our plans for Wednesday, Saturday, and then for Friday), Grace Y. (and our plans for Jenny to visit), Maureen (and our plans for after Mass); and the message not left for Anjali (including the thoughts of her---by many alti and soprani in choir---upon singing the conclusion of Bob Farrell's "Crucifixus")...and I write of these thoughts here.

I think of Mom and I watching "Dancing with the Stars" last night, our pleasant dinner with Dad after they returned from shopping...I think of the stars as I travel between Mom & Dad's home and mine early in the pre-dawn: The Big Dipper/ Big Bear/ Ursa Major visible from our urban outposts...and I heard little birdies in the trees twittering to each other as I travelled between our two locales early this morning.

I think of our friends, Rita, Elaine, and Mary Lou, to whom I delivered slices of homemade chocolate cake last night---and how Kevin and Rich in the garage turned down cake(!)

After choir practice and singing in the choir during Mass Maureen and I drove to the Chinese buffet in Monroeville to meet my parents there. We enjoyed lunch there, and then I drove Maureen and I to the Monroeville Mall for some shopping. We went to Panera Bread near her home for a snack. Then I headed home and brought her to the Oratory for Eucharistic Adoration late in the afternoon.
