"Good Son of God"
Thursday morning's Tribune Review headlines were about former Pittsburgh-native and former Pittsburgh diocese Bishop Donald Wuerl. "Good Son of God" the large headline read next to his current photo. He has been named as an archbishop, and now a Cardinal. They had interviewed Wuerl, our current bishop David Zubik, and also Dad (as he exited from morning Mass Wednesday). They chose part of Dad's quote as the headline.

Good Friday 2010
So, I had my usual breakfast this week of half a banana. After lunch I watched the last 2/3's of the Seven Last Words of Christ with Mom and Auntie Chi, as Dad was volunteering for television ministry. Then I left to go home to pick up a few things before I stopped by Mom's home. I took an dose of Imodium upon Mom's urging, got my choir folder, and brought some diluted CVS electrolyte replacement beverage to choir. The guys were practicing "Into Your Hands I Commend My Spirit" on the choir landing when I arrived.
Good Friday service was different, as Fr. Breier and Fr. Goetz celebrated Mass instead of the Bishop, who was in the hospital with a kidney stone today.

After Good Friday service, Auntie Chi and I went shopping at Waterworks Mall. I got keychains, Dad's newspaper, and adaptors for Europe. Just Adaptors.
After dinner I picked up Kelly at William and Marissa's home (where she was playing hide-and-seek with Beata and Solomon) to go meet Charles and Susan and their friend Jan in Friendship for a gallery crawl. Turns out Jan went to architecture school with our schoolmate Peter K, who was last recycling automobile materials for architectural uses in New Mexico. We got a few pictures from the evening, and Charles and I decided that Kelly is the most entertaining of my siblings and me.
I dropped off Kelly and headed home, and here I am typing so you can read this story.

Choir Birthday Celebration 2010
Today after work I watched a fascinating movie with Mom called Madeleine about a Scottish murder in the 19th Century. It was based on a true story.
Choir practice led to practice of music from Easter Sunday (backwards in time) to Palm Sunday. Nancy prepared snacks, consisting of ice cream cake, creamery milk, pizza, and potato chips! I was thrilled, and grateful, for the grand gesture.
I look forward to singing the Masses and services during Holy Week.

Ash Wednesday 2010
Full day. Taught all morning, office hours to mid-afternoon. Picked up Mom and Dad at the airport, and we went to Mass (officiated by Bishop David Zubik) at six in the evening. Many many people were there (SRO), and it took until past six forty-five to just to distribute the ashes, with many ministers helping. Then it was time for the liturgy of the Eucharist.
We enjoyed a dinner of salmon (marinated), corn, salad, rice, and stewed tomatoes. Yum. Mom and Dad began to unpack their bags, and then I departed to an early bedtime.
Just sent some emails, will crawl back into the warmth of my bed soon.

Dispensation
According to an email from Don, our music director,
"If you haven’t heard via the media: Bishop Zubik has cancelled the obligation to attend mass this weekend. He will not be at Sunday’s 10am and/or noon mass."
meaning an off-day or snow day from choir. Don't have to pop a side shovelling, so to speak.
Well, it is a Good Thing Maureen and I made it to Mass this morning at ten.

Leading Up to G-20 Pittsburgh
Monday night after work and physical therapy I attended the Pittsburgh Summit Interfaith Prayer Service at Saint Paul Cathedral. There was an organ prelude and postlude by Don, hymns, a welcome by Bishop David Zubic, a sounding of the Shofar, Scriptural readings, sung psalms by the Compline Choir, intercessions, musical interludes, a sign of peace, the prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi, and tag team blessings and benediction.
Maureen and I found out F had been mugged, in a safe neighborhood. Karina went to visit her Monday.

Wednesday (yesterday) Maureen and I brought a salmon and quiche dinner and snacks to F, who was visiting with her beau, J. We spent the visit talking about various things, enjoyed soft drinks, and all prayed together before we departed for our favorite jazz place. (No jazz tonight.) There were lots of filming tents and trailers in the neighborhood...they're filming a movie in that neighborhood, I saw posters for extras up this week. We enjoyed milkshakes, and saw A out on a stroll, too.

Today, we were planning on brunch with William's family. I checked out the G20 website for road closures and permits for demonstrations. I heard through the grapevine that there may be protests (non-permitted) in our neighborhood. I called the police special events committee, and they indicated that any additional protests would be without a permit, as no new permits were being issued. I thanked her, and noted that I saw guys in fatigues in my building at work yesterday, ensuring our safety.
Needless to say, our brunch is postponed.

Preparing for Jenny's Arrival
After Luce departed early Monday morning, I took a brief nap. Mom, Dad, and I went to Greentree for the Chinese Buffet, and went straight to Dr. Pat's office to pick up supplies for the medical mission. We stopped at Tuesday Morning for some shopping, and I went home and did some laundry and dishes in between a cool lemonade break with Maureen. I dropped off the pill cutter for mom late Monday night.
Tuesday I lectored and also attended the evening Mass with Maureen. I had my physical therapy in the afternoon, as mentioned in my previous entry.
Today I went Downtown to pick up shoes I had dropped off for repair, went to Mom & Dad's, then picked up my meds and ran into Jenn, who will meet with Jenny Friday. Spoke with Jenny, some other friends, and took a bus home. SR gave me little magnetic words!
I must vacuum and empty the dishwasher before tonight is over...

Good Friday 2009
I had a doctor's appointment in Monroeville late this morning. I was pleased to hear the outcome/results.
Good Friday Service will be celebrated at 13:30. I will be in the choir loft by 13:00. I must walk home and pick up my choir folder....

I made it back to Oakland in time to check my email at the main campus library, walk to get my choir folder at Mom & Dad's home, and get to the choir loft by 13.00.
During the veneration of the cross we sang probably the first celebration of "Crucifixus" by Bob Farrell (definitely a first at St. Paul Cathedral in Oakland). Jennifer H., who stands next to me, and I agreed that it is a powerful piece of music to sing and hear sung.

After the service, I took a nap and then Mom & I picked up William at Carnegie Mellon for the celebration of my and Solomon's birthday. We were planning on celebrating at St. Bartholomew's parish fish fry in Penn Hills, but there was no Good Friday fish fry. St. Irenaeus in Oakmont and 'Mac' in Bloomfield did have Good Friday fish fries, but we decided on making Solomon happy at the Penn Hills Eat N Park.
We enjoyed our meal (I had the whitefish sandwich and the salad bar), we gave Solomon his gifts (I gave him colorful wooden keys and a lock on the keychain), and Beata made me her second card for me (which I photo-documented) and presented me with their gift she had personally selected from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History (a handmade Kenyan necklace).
Dad called us from the hospital on our way home (a medical emargency on his way home from television ministry), was happy to see us when he arrived home, and we watched a small portion of 20/20 on ABC, and then I collapsed into bed.

Father Leo Vanyo's Mass of Christian Burial
We went to the hip doctor this morning. The attending or resident doctor has the same name as one of my students! I am pleased with the outcome of my first hip replacement, and the outcome of the appointment was that I should think about when I should have my surgery and call the office to schedule it.

I treated Mom & Dad to Japanese buffet for lunch. We went shopping for table linens afterwards, and I went to physical therapy and donated some items after. I had a small dinner, and then went to choir practice. We had a new choral member join, Craig. Nancy and I chatted for a while after practice.

Before the Steelers Parade
Before the Steelers Parade downtown at the Point, I walked out to Fifth Avenue about 11:25am. At the bus stops, every bus heading downtown was packed with humanity. A motorcycle police-escorted set of buses heading in the opposite direction had several "decoy" buses in the convoy, and one bus which most likely held the Steelers. My physical therapist and I discussed what I had observed about the buses later today.
Renee and I lunched together, and we enjoyed each other's company, especially since she will have a new job next week downtown.
Today I signed up for a health club (the same one Mom and Dad belong to). I'm really excited about using the heated pool and taking chair yoga!
I also ran some errands in Squirrel Hill.

Sunday at Church, 25 January 2009--Manifesting the Kingdom Awards 2009
This noon, the choir sang at the Mass for the Feast of the Conversion of Saint Paul the Apostle. Fr. Michael Darcy from the Oratory celebrated the Mass.

A half-month ago I received a phone call from Judy Mullen of the Diocesan offices, inviting me to read awardee names after the Manifesting the Kingdom Awards Mass at three o'clock today. I agreed, and a week later received in the mail a list of all the awardees, grouped by 1./ Parish, 2./ Religious Community and 3./ service to the Diocese. I was told that there would be four of us reading the names.
After a quick lunch at the crepes restaurant with Ornella, Christoph, and Christen, (during which Ornella split a Nutella crepe with the rest of us after we had eaten our savory crepes), I reported to the sacristy for reading duty. We were divided into two teams: Nathan and I read as Team 1 (alternating readers between us after every 5 or so names). We read the first 4 pages of names, relinquished to the other 2 readers, and then read the page of (2) Religious, then reliquished our reading of (3) those providing service to the Diocese, then read those who received the award but could not be present for the Mass.
I saw Enrique B. before Mass, as he read the first reading. As we headed down the east nave side aisle, I saw my former student, EW, who asked if I were in choir ("This afternoon it's the Diocesan choir--I'm reading at the end of Mass," I replied.)
Bishop Zubic celebrated the Mass with many priests present. The newly-elected Bishop co-celebrated, also.
The formal part of the awards ceremony ended at ~ five twenty in the afternoon.

Baptism of Our Lord--Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration 2009
A special Mass to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was said today at noon at St. Paul Cathedral. Bishop David A. Zubik was the main celebrant. The St. Paul Cathedral, St. Charles Lwanga, and St. Benedict the Moor combined choirs provided the music ministry, led by our choir directors Don Fellows, James Avant, and Toni Long, respectively. We practiced together for an hour and a half before Mass, and all attending were spiritually moved by the music...I saw Carol B, whom I had invited from last night.

Bishop Zubic called for courage, compassion, and constancy in living our lives in his homily. A small disturbance by one man caused the Bishop to say, "We are celebrating the Eucharist," and various ushers leapt to get the man aid.

After retrieving our jackets, my friends Gloria, Alroy, Jennifer H., Nancy C., Alice S., and I headed downstairs to enjoy lunch, fellowship, and the program. The Central boys chamber singers welcomed us to the Social Hall space, there was an invocation, a liturgical dance of the Pater Noster by Evelyn Kitchen-Stevens and her friend, and all of us in attendance performed the dance with them, too. Greta Stokes-Tucker welcomed the students who won the essay awards, "What Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Means to Me," one at a time to the podium to read their essays.
Neal Huguley (music director of Northview United Presbyterian Church) led us in various songs, including: "We Shall Overcome," "Certainly, Lord," and "This Little Light."
The Rev. Dr. Ronald Edward Peters (director, Metro-Urban Institute, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary) delivered the keynote address. After closing, we sang "We Shall Overcome," and a benediction was given.
Afterwards, I noted that singing "We Shall Overcome" should be a requirement for US citizenship (along with the "Star Spangled Banner" and "America the Beautiful,") Jennifer noted that someone told her today that people would lock their arms, arms across their chests, as they sang "We Shall Overcome." I told her the only times I had sung the song (before at Church) were at protests; and locking arms created solidarity.

Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass 2008
After singing noon Mass in the choir this afternoon, Mom and Dad told me we were invited to Phyllis and Gene's celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary this year at a diocesan-wide Mass at St. Paul Cathedral at three o'clock.
The diocesan choir sang, Debby and John W. cantored, Don played at the organ, with many of the acclamations, psalms, and hymns were written by Fr. Jim Chepponis. They also sang Ave Verum by Mozart, "Now Thank We All Our God," and a postlude, "Trumpet Voluntary."
We made our way to the basement social hall for cookies, punch, and coffee.

We celebrated Ornella's birthday with her and a group of choir and Choireland friends at the Grill restaurant on Craig Street. We had a fun time, and sang "Happy Birthday/ Buon/Feliz Compleano" to her three times.

Holy Week 2008--Good Friday 2008
After a bout of the flu, I returned to work Good Friday. This was followed by delivering candy to my colleague Elia, some photocopying, and attendance at St. Paul Cathedral of the Good Friday Passion of the Lord, celebrated by Bishop Zubik. As my friend Tina, indicated, we get to hear Don sing

as part of the responsorial psalm (Ps. 30, Chrysogonus Waddell, O.C.S.O).

I was particularly pleased with the fullness and the balanced sound of the choir. I sat at the break in the pews at the new addition on the east side of the nave, on the center aisle. Hearing De Profundis was a treat, as the last 5-10 measures always seem they should be reminiscent of Christ's last breaths and heartbeats.
I saw my friends after Mass, Dan from ceili dancing, a neighbor who appreciated my reading, and I congratulated Matt on his participation in the Passion reading. My friend invited me to a fish fry, which I did not attend due to my so-recent recovery from the flu.

Back from the Flu (So THAT'S what that sounds like!)
My first foray out into the world after the flu was to the orthopedic surgeon's office. I have my surgery scheduled for late this spring.
After an afternoon nap, and a couple of phone calls (one to my boss, that I would be in at work tomorrow; one to Don that I would not be singing tonight), Mom, Dad, and I attended the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper. Bishop David Zubik celebrated the Mass, including washing of the apostles' feet, the homily, and stripping of the altar at the end of Mass. His homily referred to a nun, Sr. Eugenia, who taught him and his classmates a prayer upon receiving the Eucharist for the first time:
Let me remember this Eucharist
as if it were the first time I am receiving the Eucharist
as if it were the last time I am receiving the Eucharist
as if it were the only time I am receiving the Eucharist
and he also referred to the
taking
blessing
breaking and
giving of the
bread at table
and the body of Christ for our sins.
It was good to hear Ubi Caritas again (one of my favorite hymns).
Mom, Dad, and I sat right behind Karina this evening in Mass.

Holy Week 2008--Palm Sunday Vigil Mass 2008
The Palm Sunday Vigil Mass was celebrated this evening by Bishop David Zubic, with other diocesan priests celebrating, and the seminarians serving. Linda was our cantor tonight, with ~15 choristers, Ken at the organ, and Don directing. Betty, Alice, Donna, and I opted out of "doin' the step drill" up to the choir loft before and after the entrance hymn by Proulx.
The homily was interesting and significant. The bishop described how, when in Green Bay, he was invited to Reading Week at a 3rd grade public school classroom. He read a passage from The Little Prince when the Prince meets the fox. The English translation is, "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly. What is essential is invisible to the eye." (I recall this passage from when William and Marissa tied the knot. My friend Stacy and I also recalled other parts of this novelette, which I had read first in Mahan's class.) The kids seemed disinterested in the passage, but asked deep questions about God of him, including, "Will you pray for me?" Which prompted a response of "If you write your [prayer requests] on a sheet of paper, I will collect them and pray for you." All the children opted for this exercise. And he shared three of those requests with us.
He also mentioned the short, three-word sentence that Jesus' best friend, John, wrote, "God is love."
I saw my friend Joan after Mass, who encouraged me to meet the bishop. She showed our appreciation for his being in the St. Patrick's parade today, and I expressed my appreciation of his passage selection. After retrieving some palms, I exited the Cathedral.

Epiphany 2008
I attended the Polish Epiphany celebration two years ago, but this year was special--the anticipated Mass was celebrated by none other than Bishop David Zubic. My friend and former coworker attended the Mass; I bussed to Polish Hill right as it ended. I saw many friends from the Oratory, from Sacred Heart Parish, from CAC, Fr. Andrew from St. Paul Cathedral, and some CAC alumni: Jen, Maggie, Ken, and their new son Drew. Jen and I had sung in their wedding just a little over a year ago.
The concert commenced with a polonaise sung by the choir and danced by the pairs of dancers. The choir was occasionally accompanied by the string group. Through the concert, our friend Margie sang several duet soli and soli. Near the end there was a solemn procession of angels; Mary, Joseph, and Jesus; the shepards, and the Wise M/en. Throughout the concert I heard people singing carols with the choir and tapping their feet. What a joyous occasion!
Margie was kind to give my friend and me a lift to Oakland after the concert. Upon arrival at their home, I joined forces with Mom and Dad to babysit Beatrice--she just fell asleep a few minutes ago. Her parents are at the Steelers game!

Nancy from choir and I spent the last few hours with Amy and her friends Liz, Britta, and Mary Beth. It was a "Wise Women" Epiphany gathering of souls. The food was delicious, and we enjoyed each others' company. We three choristers ended up by the fire, talking about singing (Eva Cassidy, Calabria Foti, Paul Potts).

Christian Leaders Fellowship: Christmas Festival 2007
Tonight I took a 71 bus downtown to the annual Christian Leaders Fellowship Christmas Festival. The Christmas Festival is an annual event. Rick sat a few rows in front of me, Jonathan and Maureen sat with Ornella, Doug, and Anjali. I could see the signer, Karen, Gretchen, and the soprano section of Dio choir, Don at the organ, and most of the choirs from where I sat in the 7th row of the orchestra center section.
After the concert, the bouncers kept us from meeting our friends on stage--but I had a chance to sign and talk with the signer. Maureen, Jonathan, and I headed home after some M&Ms in her car.

Mass/Blessing of the St. Paul Cathedral Addition
Today at three in the afternoon the choir sang at the Mass to Bless the Saint Paul Cathedral Addition. Bishop David Zubik was the Principal Celebrant and Homilist. The music ministry included the Carnegie Brass and Percussion ensemble, as well as Ken accompanying us on the organ and Christina cantoring.
Don called for our rehearsal for the Mass at 1:30 in Synod Hall, where we met up with the brass and Ken at the piano. We practiced the vocal pieces, and the order of worship included:

The homily addressed the fact that we are all temples of God, and are called to pray for each other, to listen to each other, and to DO---to actively live the word of God.
At the preparation of gifts we sang The Heavens are Telling (F.J. Haydn), with Karen, Kelly, and Alex singing the solos of Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael, respectively.
The acclamations were from a Community Mass (R. Proulx), save the chanted Agnus Dei.
At Communion we sang Church of God (Sr. Pamela Stotter, Sr. Margaret Daly) and How Lovely is Thy Dwelling-Place from the "Requiem" (J. Brahms)
The recessional hymn was Holy God, We Praise Thy Name
The exit voluntary was Canzon Primi TOni from "Sacrae Symphoniae" (G. Gabrieli)

I could spot Mom and Dad in the congregation, and I joined them for snacks and fellowship in the renovated social hall in the basement.

The addition itself is quite handy for accessibility to street, worship, and social hall levels. There are stained glass windows from other churches that were renovated, as well as new stained glass windows, including one of Archbishop Wuerl's coat of arms. There are accent elements seen in the interior of the Cathedral, as well. A great addition to the Cathedral.
